For those who has the UCD 60 and Real Flight G3 add on 1. How the the sim UCD and the real one compare. I can only speak of my 46 compared to the 60 on the sim. The 60 "feels" much heavier than the 46. It does not seem to fly the same, the sim does not want to float at all. Is this how the real 60 size fly's?

CrashBurn69...I have G3 but don't have the UCD plane. But in real life, my 60 floats as good as the 46. Very light wing loading. Fun. Very fun, to fly.
Thanks

I just flew the Realflight G3 UCD 60 and was greatly underwhelmed at the physics! I had wanted them to add our favorite plane since forever and I am glad I got to try it out on some one else's dime! I was thinking similar things CRASHBURN69, maybe the weight is an issue, but as I was flying it, I was thinking "is this really the way this plane flies?" ( I have the 46 not the 60) I felt like it was bottom heavy myself, (not tail heavy) it wouldn't hardly hover and it kept wanting to rotate to it's upright position like a plane with lot's of dihedral. I felt thet this was a fairly "point and fly" plane in reality. This was in my LHS so it may have been modified and I don't know what they did with wind settings.
I have always felt that Realflight was a fun program not without it's merits but it just never held up any where close to reality for me. The fact that you have no periphery of view renders it somewhat useless as a simulator. Maybe with goggle monitors (where you could turn your head and it would track your head movements) you could make it more realistic. It's like flying with only a computer screen to look at, no ability to turn your head or look behind/beside you. To land on the strip I have to use small fixed ground points to tell where I am in relationship to the strip. The best thing RF did for me was that has imbedded in me the "flying at myself" technique of control, I use the "stick towards low wing" technique. I used to always turn my back to the plane to re-orient myself but after a few weeks on G2 (the one I own) I was able to stop this bad habit! Now I can fly towards myself with second nature! No more doubt or panic!
I'm glad some one else wrote about this, I was just trying it yesterday and I was wondering similar things! This is an awesome thread! I am always looking forward to reading new posts! I have gained some invaluable data from these guys. My UCD 46 is nearing completion. I only await a better engine (the OS Mas .50 SX they suggested isn't cutting the mustard) and have a couple small mods left to do before I maiden with it. I was sure hoping to be flying it in Realflight, too. But now I don't think it would really help that much.

Blister...Yea, the sims don't create reality, but they do serve a purpose. The flilght orientation problems are quickly cured, as you found out, with a sim. I don't really use mine much and I don't spend money on it for special airplanes etc. I only use it when I haven't flown in a long time (winter lay off, 3-4 months). Then I use it to get the fingers moving in the right directions again. I also use it occasionally to try a diffierent maneuver. It saves a few planes that way. Right now I trying to learn rolling harriers. I slow the physics way down to about 40%. This allows you time to think and input the correct stick action. That also allows you to see exactly what has to happen. On a rolling harrier that can be difficult. Anyways, I find it helpful for training in a very limited area.
One thing I never do with my sim is use it, play it, as a game. I'm just not interested in that . Training only. But even then, practice flying the real thing is better training I believe.
Thanks

New servos for the Giant will be here tomorrow. I'm looking to get some flying with it on Wednesday. With my new prop combo and servos that work instead of break, I'm looking forward to a nice day at the field. Thanks

I use my Aeroflight Pro sim pretty much the same way Barry. Here it can rain for weeks so it gives me some stick time while I'm waiting and just like you said to practice a new manuver. Since I'm instructing at the field now I do ask the students that want to fly if they have a sim and have found that if they have some sim time they seem more ready for the "real" plane, except for landing and take off. Landing and take off, at our field anyway, is nothing like the sim. It's funny, this one younger guy came down to the field and wanted to fly. He said that he had flown the sim quite a bit. The funny thing was that after only his 3rd flight up (just flying around) he asked when he could get his solo card. (?) [X(] I wouldn't want to burst his bubble or hold him back but landing and take off from the real field is quite different. I don't know if he ever took the test. I haven't seem him back there since.

Has anyone answered the karbonite/blue thread lock riddle? I don't get it why it would cause the servo gear to become brittle. Or do you think this was a "red herring" to throw the public off? Sounds to me like they had servo arm screw issues as well (not long enough/too long) and are just looking for a way out of owning up to the problem. What a bummer. I hope Hitec isn't headed down the road to hell (like Sony, among others) as far as the quality of product is concerned. I just bought the Hitec Optic 6 system with the Spectra, channel synth module and HFD-08RD receiver. I have the dumb luck of buying something just as the bad reports start surfacing! (I'm not saying that I've seen any bad press yet but now that I bought one, I'm sure to see it now) The money was right, I just hope that I end up with a little more or at least as much value as I paid for!
Speaking of servos, what do the experts think is the best buy for the UCD 46? (other than Airtronic, incompatible with Optic 6) I have a 100+ oz. servo for the rudder but I fear that at 0.33Sec/60° speed might be too slow. Plus I fear that my JR NES-517's and 537's might not work even at 6 volts for the other surfaces. I'm trying to keep from laying down another $200 or more in servos in light of the fact that this brand new $160 OS Max .50 SX (when I said "they suggested" in my earlier post, I meant that Great Planes suggested it in the manual, not the guys posting to this thread) is going to be scrapped to buy a 72 or 82 Saito 4-stroke! That would be a drag to have everything else right and no power, or all the power and no servo torque. One of these days I'll get it all right!

Hi People:-)...
I have Aerofly pro also, And I just won in a raffle the G3 with the #1 add-on... I have been
trying G3.. For a bit now.... I may just be more use to AFP... But I think its better overall, plus
you can get tons of "free" D/L'ed models to fly... (The heck with $29.99 to get maybe a few models
that you really want) The graphics may be better... but there is AFPD
I don't really use the sim much... But when I can't fly for a while and or practice old/new move it
does help..... And I "REALLY LIKE" the repairs on the sim.... Low and Slow is a breeze now
Bliss..... IMHO...... I really believe standard BB servos of atleast 57oz is all that the Do needs to do
all that it can............ But the big boy's does not hurt... Well maybe a little in the pocket book...
Well, My "Do" has been doing great!!! No same setup on the ant[:@].... But the last few flights the
"Do" has been really singing... At first I just took it for the "Do" harmonics... But then a fellow
member asked, "is your prop balanced?" I said sure, with my finger balancer.... He tells me to buy
a good balancer, that finger balancer is "C__ap.. Anyway I recheck it, using my "C__ap" balancer...
Try it again... No change.... So at home I went through the "Do".... And for what ever reason my T.T.
spinner backplate was spinning on the hub.... Even with the prop nut and spinner adapter nut tight..
I mean tight(my problem in life)... So tight that the tapered end od the adapter cracked off between
the prop nut and shaft threads
... It took a bit to get the nut off, But all came off in good condition..
Will see in the AM.... with my now spinner-less "Do" And when I get back home... Maybe my new
balancer will be at the door....
Gary.............. Hey thanks guy!!!!!!!!......... The S 100 spins smoother than "Butta"..... Let's see...
Up on the crank connecting rod pin.... Down on the cam timing mark........ K... I can do that

Blisster...On the 46...any servo over 50ozs works ok. Better if you are around 75 ozs. I try not to scimp on servos, even if you upgrade over time, because they can always be used (almost always) in your next plane. Like the UCD60 which needs over 90 ozs to fly good. But the 46 is pretty forgiving. I know people who fly it with the Futaba 3004 servos are 44 ozs torque. I cannot recommend that though.
On the servo breakage issue. I broke two of the servos. I think the gear is too brittle. More than likely what happened to mine is I overtightened the screw. I used to torqueing the screws down pretty good. I think it fractures the karbonite gear. I use almost exclusively Hitec servos. Mostly I've upgraded to the HS5945, HS5645, HS5625 depending on what application. I've never had a problem except with the karbonite gear servos and the mini HS85BB I was using for a throttle. Other than that I like the servos and use them a bunch.
Thanks

From: Chester, WV,
RAIDERON - Be careful over tightening the Spinner Nut. Here's why,,,,,,,,
Over tightening the Spinner Nut ( Which also sreves as a Jamb Nut), will actually loosen the torque on the Prop Nut.
What happens is, over torquing the Spinner Nut will actually stretch the shaft slightly, which loosens the torque on the prop nut.
We had a long conversation about this one night at the field and the more I thought about it, the more I realized what the problem was. I asked one one the Mechanical Engineer guys at work and he said absolutely, over torquing the Spinner Nut will loosen the Prop Nut.

Yeah perkinsm.... That has been one of my bad habits.... Just another nudge.... That
nudge has made me change a few wheel studs etc.... I knew I have been torguing
to much on the prop and adapter nuts... But I have never had one back off or come
loose...... I thought if any engine, I would have trouble on the S-82... The T. T. adapter
nut was so long because of the 14X4W thin blade, in comparison to the Y.S, Mag and
OS and S-100 adapter nuts I have used.. And it has[:@]... But luckily I just have to
replace a backplate and nothing else
... I already removed the one off of my dead
Kat.. If all this shows me that was my vib. problem...... I can still be happy... Will see
in the AM....
Great point... Don't over torque!!!
Hope old dogs can learn new tricks!!!
Thanks.....

That's great Rob.... I was thinking about getting some to keep the cowl/firewall clean,
well maybe a bit longer on a tk. also:-))
Well UPS rcheduled for today....Out 6am.. 5:30pm now ^&(#!.... Should be here before
their day's end.. Maybe...
Well I made a few more changes on the "Do".... So weather permitting... I'll get to see
if my vibration is better..... And "Maybe" my ant. glitch...... Ohh, I also will test run the
S 100 on the stand after the bearing change... I'm hoping for two out of three.... I think
the glitch.... Well let's just wait and see...............

Man, my servo came in today. I was visiting with the UPS guy and he said something about a shipment that was to go to Arizona but was delayed.....!?!?!?!?Anyways, Ron, sorry you didn't get your stuff.
I mounted my servo in the Giant today so I'm ready to fly. But it's gonna be a couple of days before I can take the time. Hopefully on Thursday I can take a long lunch and see what this baby will do. I have now added 2.5 ozs to the Giant and I haven't even hardly flown it yet. I'm at about 12lbs 5 ozs. Even heavier with the dust on it. But with the high RPM 17x6 prop I was over 16lbs thrust. Maybe it will feel better.
I've been in a discussion on another thread about weight for a proposed 50CC gasser. I'm thinking about a CAP232 by Great Planes. With a EVO engine on it the weight by the book would be about 13.5 lbs. That brings the wing loading to about 26ozs. Everybody seems to say to keep it light and that 26 ozs is a great wing loading. For reference the Giant has a wing loading of 15ozs! This baby ought to be a feather in the sky. I'm not sure I understand all the wing loading stuff, but I do understand weight and I try to keep it as light as possible.
Anyways, have fun all.
Thanks
Barry

There are some web pages devoted to wing loading formulas. It seems as the planes get larger, higher wing loading has less effect. I dont pretend to understand why,but its in black & white. As for the Do,the extra fat air foil is not taken into account in the wing loading formula. That aspect is part good and part bad. The good part is even slower stall speeds, the bad is poor tracking, precision and wind buffeting. I dont sweat the wing loading too much, dont have the patience to weigh every servo, control rod/horn,gear,ect....I think the average flyer can get his plane to 3-D fine without all that fuss. To keep it DOD & do ALL the stunts down low might require the lowest wing loading, but I,m not there yet. For now, I'm happy to do some things DOD-like hovers, harriers, walls. If I ever get good enough to try everything low, then I might start weighing control horns and swapping out grade B balsa for grade A!

Hi all.... UPS did show up last night at 8:20....
This morning the "Do" ran great... extra vibration is gone:-)))) S 100 ran Great on the
test stand... Did not try the ant. wire in it's normal position yet.... So I did get 2 out of
3 successes :-).... Was going to try 3 out of 3... But had to bring out the spad for a
pylon race.....
.... She also did very well.......
Well my new charger is charging.... and I guess I'll go mess with prop/spinner balancing,
Dang I knew my finger balancer was good enough..... Ohh well I get to balance all now
)
I'll also switch the 6v battery from the showtime to the "Do" and use the HydriMax 6.0V
nimh in the showtime, that should give me a day's flying....... B Good People...
Barry..... The Cap should be fun!!! IIRC The G.P. model was suppose to be one of the better
ones in terms of the snapping on the 232's..... Keep us updated if you do get it....

Well, I'll get my chance at the Do controls this afternoon. The rains are a thing of the past and the winds are finally down. I still need to put on the new velocity stack but I'll get some flying in today first. [8D]

I got the Giant ready again and I'm going to try for in the morning. If it breaks another servo I'll let you know. And Hitech, and my neighbor, and my left handed friend, and my wife, and the guy at the country corner store, and the guy selling the $3/gallon gasoline. Thanks
Barry
