Yes,,, it's true. [
] VF is closing the website and will not be taking anymore orders for awhile it seems. Get what you need now .
Bunnman,,,, That .91 will fly the Edge,, but not like you may expect. Probably just basic aerobatics with a true scale performance. (Maybe not that good.) The full scale Zivko Edge has tons of horse power and is very, very fast. Before they were redesigned for aerobatic flight the Edge-540 was a race plane that won several Reno air races in it's division class.
I started with a Saito-100 in mine using a 15x6 APC. It would hang the plane vertical ,, but just barely. No hovering down low period.
Switched to the OS.91FX with a 15x4 wood prop. Better vertical but have lost that wonderful low-end torque I had with the 4-T.
The Saito-120 on the other hand is just heavy enough that it hurts the flight dynamics and creates more wing loading. The ticket has got to be the new and upcoming Saito 125. Light and powerful. Also I think a YS-110 would work if a you could somehow remove enough weight from the fuse area to even the load. I have NEVER seen a tougher designed fuse on any other plane. I can't believe the abuse this thing will take after beefing up the landing gear area and other small details listed on this great thread. But the weight of the fuse compared to the lightness of the foam-core wings prohibits 3D flying . At least the kind of 3D'ing I can do.
Yup gjeffers,,, we found our best reading website almost at the same time. I was a member of several other RC sites before finally coming to the conclusion that RCU is not only the best info site for RC,,, it's hands down the most accurate and up to date.
I was trying to learn more about the hobby and coming up short at some of the other websites. Although like any RC website you must realize not everything you read here is fact or what you might discover in your own modeling experience. Such as when somebody say's "SO and SO plane flys like crap !!" Well,,, your sitting there in front of your PC monitor thinking.... "Geez,,, what a bummer,,,I just ordered that plane... but I'll build it anyway and then sell it to someone that hasn't read this review."
THEN.... the plane turns out to be one of the best flying machines you ever wagged a pair of stick at. Most of the information I find here or at other sites depends alot on how much stick and modeling time you got. Plus I have made several good friends over the years that I can call and ask questions to.
Better safe than sorry IMHO. Let a brain surgeon cut on your melon. But let a modeling artist cut on your cowl. lol....

Yeah it is a shame I really do hope then can come back bigger than ever. I still want to do a VF fly-in that was mentioned way eariler back in the thread. That would be so awsome... I did contact VF about it eariler, as to maybe they could have a representive there or a table setup. They did think it was great idea however, they did't want to attract to much business for their limited space and production time. Maybe something could happen next season...
Yeah gjeffers, It was I who put the large "EDGE 540" on the bottom of the wing, and it was probally the best idea i ever had. Helps with the orientation of the plane and it just looks plain cool when knife edging across the field. The material used is surprizingly strong vs the nitro. I only had a little piece start folding up due it was right in the path of the exhuast. But a little CA and never came up again.

Later on i may just try out the the saito 125. My buddy on the field who was going to sell his YS 110 backed out so im out of a powerhouse. Right now im happy with the saito. Mixed with 30% nitro it hauls quite well, and give the motor a little more run time it could only get better.

Wow, real pisser there. Should I buy a spare Edge or save my pennies for a Saito 125??? Decisions, decisions. Won't get much done on the plane tonight. I got a wedding and then an early morning at work...yes, on Saturday even! Hopefully I'll get back to the bench tomorrow night for a few hours. I'd like to get the joiners epoxied in and get to work on the fuse.

Oh..you've GOT to be kidding!
I haven't even received my plane..and I read their closing?!?!
I can't even put into words how frustrated this makes me...
I don't even know what parts I'm GOING to break....and now will have no way to buy spare parts?!?!
I just sent them an e-mail...gotta get a game plan going!
This just plain SUCKS!
Nuts!

oh man, that sucks there shutting the doors[:@] (hopefully for just awhile) when they emailed me that my plane should ship in 7-9 days(which is monday) they told me and said they may be back so all we can do is hope and let them know we will be here for another plane, i can say that with confidence after reading the thread here so i hope they come back!!!
rcfury, those letters on the wing are vinyl grafix stick ons right? we have a grafix shop 25 miles away and i still have to check with them( ill take the plane there so they can see what i want).
yea sturtz, this is the place to be, its all i had to get me going in rc planes since i live near death valley and there is no one here that flys and ive had a lifelong dream of flying rc planes(and real planes), ive learned all i know here and have taught myself with the people here to fly, i started with a small 3 ch ele and then bought me a alpha trainer and took her to the field, fired her up and flew her(not a pretty sight) but i got her down with just a broken prop, and broke about 10 more before i got my landings down, since i have had a h9 arrow, ucd 60, another ucd 60,ucd 46, and now for my first real plane, the vf edge, i cant wait
thanks guys!!!

Hmmm....
I suggest... order a cowl, a belly pan.... I guess that is it for now... you could get crazy and order a wing set... but if you need that...you need a fuse too!
Seems the cowl is the most replaced thing....on any cowled plane......
but I ramble

Yup,,, I stole Nathan's idea as did others and made a couple of changes .That was on my first wingset. Really does help while flying out further away or while doing axial rolls. Don't have the graphics on the new wingset and I can really tell the differance.
If anyone is interested I can give you the email address of my friend who does vinyl graphics for a living. He does custom lettering for stock car racers. He does my computer business decals that I place on all my custom built gaming and business machines.
His prices are very cheap and I don't think you'll find anything of equal quality for the price anywhere.
Tell him Kurt sent ya.

Here's a few pics of his work on my planes. I just sent him the font I wanted plus the exact measurements and what I wanted it to say. I am a pretty fair hand with PhotoShop if anyone needs some help putting their ideas onto screen.

Finally got back to work on it tonight. Almost had a fire in the shop! I mixed up a BIG batch of 30 min. epoxy to install the wing joiners in the wing halves and got the right side in when I turned around to grab my cup o' epoxy to lather up the left side and the whole shop was filled with smoke behind me! Smelled kind of electrical, well sorta. I half panicked but couldn't think of what it could be...I wasn't charging anything or using any power other than the lights. Then I noticed it was coming from the epoxy. I guess small batches is the ticket. That 30 min stuff got a rock hard ball in it in less than 10 minutes then just set there cookin'. Anyway, a quick whip of a new batch for the left side and all is well...I think (haven't tried to fit it after gluing yet.
Now the reason for my post: I marked a circle around the engine mount so I could roll it over inverted and redrill the holes. Once bolted up I measure the position of it on the firewqall and it is offset to the left 1/8". Is this a design thing or a manufacturing goof? Shoul dI preserve the 1/8" offset when I drill the new holes? Maybe it's in anticipation of shimming the mount for right thrust figuring that will center the motor? Help? You guys that have them in the air...where is your mount set in relation to the centerline?
Thanks and God bless,
-BunnMan
I'll check back in a little bit...going back to work on the Edge.

With the plane upright it is totally normal to have the center line offset. Looking at the plane from the front ,,,the offset should be to the right of centerline. This is not always the norm, but I can't think of a single plane I've built that didn't line up that way.
Many reasons for this. One simple reason is the built in right thrust of the firewall to compensate the torque effect. If you mounted the engine directly in the center of the firewall the prop shaft would never line up with the spinner hole in the cowling.

OK, I'm going to try to hang a few pics in this post to show what I've been up to with this thing so far. Construction so far is as most of you are quite familiar so no new developments there. What do you think of the gold striping? Worthwhile or no? Feel free to speek the truth.

When i inverted my mount on the firewall i TOTALLY forgot to incorperate the needed right thrust. So my spinner wont sit totally flush with the cowl. Oh well. Kinda late to do it again, so ill fly it as it is. This whole week has been extremely busy, as im studying for midterms and writing papers, but since now everything is done ill get back on my plane later today. The owner of my work (hobbytown) gave me the new parkzone typhoon 3d to fly and try out. Its goonna be fun!!!
Bunman wow, you build quite fast... You could probally get that bird up and going in no time. I really like the gold striping on the edge, gives it a little extra character. I love the little contrast it gives on the top of the wings with the white. Question... What motor mount was supplied with your edge? When i bought my new cowl they included another motormount. I was going to use it for my inverted install but found out its a totally differant hole pattern. Almost like its the 40 size mount not the 60 and the rails on the mount wont even fit the satio 100.. Strange.. Doesn't matter because i used my orginal mount that came witht the bird. Somthing that just came up.

nice work on the Photoshop sample there Sturtz. I thought of maybe adding that black a little away form the gold so a little white showed between. That was my dilemma with the gold in the first place. I wasn't sure whether I should lay it up on the red so 1/4" of red showed between the white and gold or right on the two like I did. I figured it would be easier to lay on this way as I had a little more flexibility in position and could clean up some of the red/white transitions that weren't "perfect". I do think a little red bewteen the gold and white would have been snazzier though...maybe down the road. Gonna stick with what I got for now and continue with the build so I can get it in the air...I'm a little anxious
Thanks for the input fellas.
rcfury,
Mine came with the Dave Brown mount which did need a little Dremel work to get my TT .91 between the rails. I gotta pick up a few blind nuts as I can't get two of mine out due to the interior structure trapping them in their current position. Got the new position marked and ready to move on once I get the hardware. Hope to get her going soon. For now I'm heading out to the field to fly Pop's Stinger! Maybe I'll take the bike, it's beautiful out there!

Hey fellas,
I know it's gotta be in the thread somewhere but I can't find it off hand. What throws are you using on rudder and elevator? I set the Ailerons to 1" up 3/4" down as I found in the thread but aren't sure about the others.
Thanks and God bless,

Bunman: Well for the Elevator my low rates are just a hare above 3/8" and high rates just above 5/8"... Rudder im using 1 1/2" for low rates and as much as I can squeeze for high rates...
Well im almost done with everything now, Im still waiting for my my onboard glow to arrive from Horizon. And need to hit the hardware store and find a pipe holder or something to secure the flexpipe. Everything should work out fine. If you can in one of the pictures i decided to use one of my extra revolution base loaded antennas instead of the whip.
Question though. Granted the fuel lines are a tad long but, would it be a problem for having the lines set up like that? Exiting the top of the firewall then all the way down. Worst case scenaro i have an extra shaker pump thats collecting dust.

Thanks fury,
I'll speed up the rudder a little, I think I'm getting about 1 1/2" on high rate right now.
Ran into my first real snag on the build so far. I was fitting everything up to get an idea of where to put things as far as balance and noticed my wings weren't square with the fuse. I stretched a tape from the taill of the fuse to each tip and found them to be out better than a half an inch! The only thing I added since the last check was the dowel through the fuse. I cut the end of the dowel off for the left wing (the one that was swept too far rearward) and drilled out the pre-marked holes at the rear of the wing cut out everyone has been using to pull the rear of the wings together. Then I put the wings back on and made sure the new hole lined up with the pre-marked hole on the right wing and it was dead on. Wings back off again to drill the hole in the right wing and slip the dowel through just for good measure. Everything is cool so out comes the dowel and on go the wings. Stretch the tape back to the tail again to square the wings. Best I could do is get the tips within 3/16" of each other. then mark the location of the "new" hole on the root rib of the left wing which, sure enough, is about 1/8" behind the pre-marked hole. Wings back off to carefully drill out the new hle in the left wing, CA the dowel in place, wings back on and measure to find the tips again within about 3/16" - good enough. Now I have two dowels through the fuse and the right wing but only one through into the left wing. Easy enough fix I guess but I'm at a loss as to why the left wing is off in the first place. I triple checked everything before ever gluing. Bonus is the two dowels give me an awesome place to zip tie my receiver to! Might even be able to put the battery there if the balance allows for it. Pics will follow soon.

hey rcfury, as far as those fuel lines being too long, i have mine in my ucd 60 about the same as what your showing and mine runs great, i cant see how much off center your tank to spraybar is but from what i can see you might have to fuel and fly or you may have flooding probs(looks likeabout 3/4-1in higher tank than spraybar?)if so will run alright just will lean alittle when inverted, im going horizontal with my 125 no matter how much cutting on the cowl i have to do, ive had it with offcentered tanks!!

Gjeffers: Thanks for the heads up. Well i got my tank as low as i can get it so it should be allright. Then again my eyes have decieved me before. Pretty much i just got to burn some fuel and see how it works. Im kinda a nit picker and nothing could be perfect. Well im new to running motors inverted so bear with newbieness...
Anyway everything is pretty much done put the decals on the cowl and secured. I do need to drill a hole in the cowl so I can access the low speed needle, but thats it. Gosh i can tell you one thing since i mounted the motor inverted its so much easier to take the cowl on and off. It just slides on and slides off, with no hesitation. So awsome!!! Tomorrow im going to balance and weigh the plane. Hopefully i didn't gain to much weight before the build.

fury,
Hope your fuel line set up works out well 'cause mine's about the same! I cheated on the inverted motor a little though. As stated before I couldn't get the top two blind nuts out of the firewall because of the plywood that runs laterally right behind them. When I went to invert the mount I found I wasn't going to be able to set any new blind nuts on the top of the mount because of the same piece of ply so I rotated the mount a bit off inverted so I could pick up one of the old holes. Also allowed me to point my stock muffler darn near straight out the back on the bottom of the plane which should minimize any oil on the plane. I did have to cut a hole to clear the rocker covers but it isn't very big. I drilled the mount out to add another mounting bolt to get back to the stock 4. I promise some pics real soon

Yeah i had the same blindnut issue on my plane. Stupid me sometimes can get impatient so when trying to remove them i noticed they didn't budge. So what i did was bang harder, until SNAP! oops.. the lateral ply wood support ended up breaking. I removed the blind nuts but, now i have an un-ubstructed path. After reinstalling the blindnuts i cut some scrap ply to reinforce the area.
Yeah im kinda hard on my plane. If i dont rip it to shreads in the air, im destorying it on the ground.

Well I finished everything up on the motor half that is. Put some fuel in it and carried it out to the backyard to run the motor. Motor runs pretty good. I can definatly tell that the motor loads pretty quick when at idle. That probally has to do with low end being a tad on the fat side. Gonna spend a little more time this week and see what happens when i turn some needles.
Well I did have my throttle linkage come off twice when running the motor, NOT GOOD. Im using one of those quick links, and i think its becasue the music wire im using is a smaller diameter then the link it made for. So the linkage just pulls out. So far im quite happy with the results. Im probally going to experient with a cline regulator and see what happens. Just one of the many goodies i picked up for cheap at a RC auction / tradeshow.

Glad to hear it runs, a little tuning ought to dial it right in! I never thought of breaking the plywood to gain better access, actually not a bad plan. I may look into that in the future if I feel the need to strengthen things up a bit. Aint gonna get into it now because in addition to some plywood, there's also a fuel tank in the way!
Get that linkage tuned up too! It aint no fun losing throttle control and circling the field forever with nothing to look forward to but a deadstick!
John form VF saw my post about the wings and sent me an email...man I'm gonna miss these guys, hope they're back soon.
Started on the cowl last night, just have to finish it and a few other odds and ends up and she's ready to rock! Hoping to get in the maiden this weekend. As for right now I need a short nap before getting back to work. Been up kinda late most of the week

How are you going to be running the muffler? Since your doing the inverted setup. My orgianl plan was to use the slimline pitts for the inverted saito but, were all out of stock so i instead used the flexpipe as you havn't figured out from the pics.
