I was able to get my Syssa 30cc installed today. I also got the EI, battery, thottle linkage, and switch installed. The EI and battery pack are installed inside the fuse next to the firewall.

Very clean Zippi. Did you make an access hatch to access the EI and battery. I hated pulling everything out to get to it. Not mention the fire when the ignition battery blew. That was a mess.

I have some foam pushed in under the tank so if something was to happen I can pull it out pretty quick. If the wing is off. I the wing is bolted on there wont be much I can do. I'm banking on passed history. I have never had a fire...yet.

Zippi, how is the flying weather up there? It is nice here in Florida. I may fly tomorrow AM. My Grandson up in Hesperia Michigan flew this afternoon. I guess it will be above freezing there for 2-3 more days!!! Take Care, Capt,n

Capt'n,

We get a few good days here and there but when it gets warm the wind picks up a lot. Wish I was down there to go flying with you in the good Florida weather.

Sourkraut - The Rascal 40 ARF is in the works. In fact I am working on it today. However, delivery is still a ways away - probably around May.

Zippi - Re: the pre-glued hinges ... you've got me pulling my hair out over this one! I thought we were making a huge improvement by gluing in the hinges! I know personally that gluing hinges is at the top of my "hate to do" list. I understand what you are saying about wanting more throw for your 3D flying, but honestly, when we bring 500 Rascal 110s into the country, how many do you think are being flown 3D? I'd guess maybe one or two. Certainly less than a handful. I'll bet that the other 498 owners are glad the hinges are already glued in. Sorry 'bout that, but that's the facts of life. Would it really take any more effort to cut off the pre-glued hinges and reinstall new ones, than it would of to glue in all the hinges in the first place. By the way, I LOVE the videos I've seen on youtube of the 3D Rascal. Is that yours?

If I could only have one R/C airplane, this would be a Rascal 110. Mine won't 3D - it's only got a Gemini 160 Twin for power - but I love it! Especially on floats. I'm looking forward to the new tricks all you great pilots out there will dream up using the flaps. Should be a fun summer!

Mike,

The hinge issue is a personal thing for everyone I guess. I'm sure most builders love the fact that it's less work. Changing to the Robart style hinges was a very good idea. My last Rascal had the throws maxed out and it would break the CA hings. I replaced them all with Robarts. Not sure which video you are refering to. There are a few out there. The Rascal 110 is a very nice plane to fly and looks great as it crabs in for a low slow pass or a nice slow KE pass. My last Rascal had a G26 on the business end and didn't have the power to hold it in a hover very long. Hopefully my new Rascal with the Syssa 30cc will do the job.

I agree that Robarts were an improvement, but I have to agree with Zip that allowing a bit more throw would be nice.

As you said, though, it wouldn't be difficult to cut them, and most folks probably appreciate the time savings.

I'm guessing that buyers of this type of plane have all developed a personal preference for such things.

Mike,

I don't mind the hinges being glued in as long as they are glued CORRECTLY. On one of my wings, beleive the left one, the hinges are pushed in too far and I can't get the correct travel (aileron). The other wing is fine.

Any ideas before I call????

Thanks dude. Can't wait to get this one in the air.

freedogg,

Sorry to hear that dude. If you can't get the max throw there are only two choices. Cut the hinges off the and re-hinge or give SIG a call. One of my ailerons is a little snug on hitting the max throw in the up position. It should wear in a little.

I haven't had time to start construction on my 110 yet but having owned a rascal before and seeing the quality of the new plane, I am glad for the Robart style per-hinging. All of the hinging on my Racal are secure as tested with some judicious pulling. The flaps will come in handy for shortening those well-known Rascal float like landings. I am powering mine with an Evolution 35cc gas motor.

Thank you SIG for bringing back a great plane. Any chance of bringing back the 50cc sized Sundancer biplane? I fly mine regularly and wouldn't mind having another one.

Zippi,

Thanx for the reply. Your Syssa looks sweet. I still haven't decided which engine to use. Did you have to put spacers under your standoffs??

As far as my hinge problem goes, what throws are you getting on your ailerons?? Mine seem to be binding on down aileron. Getting a little under an inch.

Thanx

I added 1/4" spacers. On my ailerons I'm getting almost the max. It is right on the bubble. There is a fellow on one of the other forums that is flying his with an electric setup http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=7m54dtL9R5g.
I'll ask him what his throws are.

freedogg ... The manual calls for a high rate setting of 1-3/8" up and 1-3/8" down for the ailerons. You probably won't be happy with "a little under an inch". Please call Becky at 800-247-5008. We'll see if we can get you another wing.

emailbanter ... I like the big Sundancer too. Still have mine, with a 3.4 (56cc) gas engine. Unfortunately it was a slow seller. Maybe because it wasn't scale. We've talked about making another short run of them, but it is a little ways down the priority list at this time.

zippi ... I certainly appreciate all the Evansville Club has done to keep the Rascal 110 alive during the 2-1/2 years we were out of them. I'm well aware of the Rascal 110 Fly-Ins your club hosted. Was it 2 or 3 years in a row? If ya ever do it again, I'll be there!

I just emailed the builder of the Rascal 110 ARF in China and told him to check out this thread. He is a avid modeler, and I am sure he will make adjustment to the hinge gap to insure that no more are shipped like freedoggs. We will continue to glue in the hinges, but take steps to make sure that every airplane has at least the travel recommended in the manual.

Btw, do you have a rough idea when Kavan will be getting their delivery of 110's for us Europeans?

We had the Rascal 110 fly-in two years in a row. There is a possible chance that we might have one this year but it all depends on parts availability. There are a lot of guys I know that are needing struts and windshields. Do you have parts available for order currently?

I also have one wing that can not get the full throw in the down position. I'm going to recheck it tonight. I also may have to give Becky a call.

I just rechecked my ailerons and I guess when I first checked them I was pushing on them hopeing they would have enough throw and I would not have an issue. In reality both of my ailerons are only getting about 1" down travel. I also have contacted Becky via email. Good thing it's winter time.

freedogg and zippi

The reason I exchanged wings with freedogg was because he was getting less than one inch of down travel in one aileron due to a hinge being pushed in too far. I believe that 1" of down travel is perfectly adequate for normal flying. In fact, my plan is to use freedogg's returned wing on my own personal airplane.

If a pilot thinks the aileron response of his Rascal is too slow (after test flying), one way to make them more effective would be to program "differential" travel (less down movement, more up movement) into the radio. There is a lot of UP travel available in the ailerons.

The aileron travel in this current lot of airplanes is completely adequate for normal flying, in our opinion. While the amount of down aileron travel in some of the airplanes is proving to be a little less than I would have liked, it's still acceptable. As I mentioned, I have contacted the ARF manufacturer about increasing the available throw in the future, but that is several months off, in a later production run. That is all we can do at this point.

If you truly want to make the Rascal a 3D airplane, you will have to cut the hinges loose and install new ones with a wider hinge gap. That's the only thing that will let you achieve the amount of travel you want.

Mike
