DL-50 engine
#2276
Well,
just in case there is anybody else out there shopping for a new 50cc engine and trying to decide which one to get, I just wanted to put down my vote for the DL. As some of you know I have been posting in this tread for a while, but now that I've got the two gallons of break-in fuel and probably another six or eight more gallons through it (I know, that's still not very much), I just wanted to say I still absolutely love this engine. I just returned from another IMAC contest (in Terre Haute, IN) and the engine performed flawlessly (as it has been all along). Now I can extend my vertical lines as high as I like. And with the Slimline Pitts muffler (made for the DA 50), I got a few "quiet" rankings in the sound scrores which surprised me a little bit. I've settled on the Xoar 22 x 8 laminated. I finished 10th out of 15 in Sportsman which is nothing to write home about, but is respectable (considering I had the only 50cc plane at the whole event - that's my excuse!). I'll stick with the little guy (27% Extra) for the rest of the season and maybe jump up to something larger next year.
Anyway, the DL is working superbly.

I went to your web page only to be surprised by what a first timer had to say, i have never seen any engine on the market yet that would even say i bought a dl-50 and went to the field with da-50 also zdz- g62 and stihl and my dl runs smoother then them all starts every time, i have yet to see any engine start everytime, also no burble at all runs like a clock, do not want to adjust it anymore to get the burble out of the idle to quarter throttle, if you bring a dl to our field we will say nice engine, nice price seems to run really nice but never have i ever heard one person put every engine on the market down as the people that have bought the dl-50, i could say many things about that engine but i will not, it is not the engines fault that so many people talk that way about any engine, runs smoother then all other engines, starts better then every engine on the market, if you go to a dl site and say that you run a da they wont even talk to you, i have never read such an add ever in my life and i would be ashamed to even post that, i live in utah and we dont put down any other engine even if it is not as nice as some of the others, people like you make me not to want to even be a part of this hobby

pilot727 -
FIRST - learn punctuation. Your messages are very difficult to follow. Take a "breath" every once in awhile; that's what the "period" "." is for.
Second - **YOU** asked "Where do I buy a DL?" Well, Denney47 happens to be a dealer. He has buyers who have offerred to post their testimonials, which are *their* thoughts about the DL 50's they have bought. If you have an issue with Tom re-posting them for potential buyers to read....well....you better get a grip. That is what "businesses" do.
Third - we (those of us that have been on this thread for a long time) work pretty hard to self-moderate so the big hammers don't have to intervene. That's why we all try to keep it pretty neutral. Sounds like you agree with that, and it is appreciated.
If you get a DL, you will probably be like Many Others. Very happy owners. And most of us know the little quirks and foibles of this engine....and it is still a great value.
I hope you get one, stay on the thread, and take more pauses in your posts.
WELCOME!!!

Got some pictures of my DL50 in a scrachbuild extra260. It has about 3 hours of total runtime and 2 hours of flighttime and it's performing fine. Just don't know how to post the pictures and I'm to lazy to find out. Can anybody tell me how please?

Howdy wavy777 I had a look at the KS Pipe site. They list a pipe for 45cc and 60cc, which one are you using?

Out of curiousity your 17 pound yak, how does it perform on the DL my GP 330s is going to be about 15 pounds. What kind of vertical and pull out from hover or you getting.
PS did you seal your hinges???

All my surfaces are sealed too.
I have a DL50 in a CAP-X coming in at 13.5 lb and the DL is way way too much power!!! unlimited rolling vertical on half throttle...
have fun!!

you must admit, it's very well conceiled, would they do it on purpose? or perhaps it's supposed to be a hobby of everyone who uses a computer to loose vast amounts of time to find out how it works

Bob, Thanks for the carb advice. Although I did not have a meter level gage, I adjusted the arm down very slightly and that allowed me to adjust the carb to eliminate the burble in the mid range. I have ordered a gage so I can check my work.
Thanks again,
John

Hey, John!! That is awesome to read! Glad it worked for you without huge hassles.
Please post back when you check it with your gauge, and let us know how far off it was, and in what direction.
It seems that the reports of "rich" midrange seem to be similar; correct the inlet needle arm height....wondering if there is a pattern, or it's just a fluke mis-adjustment.
Always curious.....
Thanks!

Here's a pretty informative, well-illustrated carb info page... from Mark Fuess.... http://tech.flygsw.org/walbro_tuneup.htm
I have the p/n's for those parts someplace...will look.
Walbro "Tool" Number is 500-13, may be part of a "tool kit", Walbro #500-500.

guys i have a DL50 in a 330S and have about 2 gallons through it. My question is that the transition seems great, now granted i will take it up for the first time saturday. i have a hard time beleiving that the carb will not need to be adjusted. is it going to change drasictaclly in the air from what i am seeing on the ground.

Fly it. That is the only way to know what adjustments are needed.
Listen to it in the air. If it bogs down, coughing spitting when going low to hi, low end is rich. In extended vertical, if you hear rpm drop off, high end is lean.
Don't be afraid to adjust based on what it is doing.
That's why our model engines still have adjustable needles, and that's why manufacturers will say "run it and adjust as needed".
The only real way to learn and understand these things is to mess with 'em.

skillet,
your carb may need adjusting, but you will not know what to adjust until you start flying it, and if it ran well on the ground, even if the needles require adjustments, they will not be far off the mark enough to give you any problems flying.
I ran mine on the ground for about five or ten minutes before I went ahead and flew it and it was supereven on break-in fuel and with the needles set slightly rich.
As long as the engine runs reliably you should have confidence and go ahead and fly.
Best of luck!!!

I have a DL 50 on a Hanger 9 150 size P-47, what prop will give me the best speed. I'm considering a carbon Bolly 22-10. If any one has tried this combination, I would be very interested in hearing about your experience.
