RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
I need to do that with mine, but now i'm forseeing a bigger? problem on my boat, seems I'm throwing alot of clutch residue from the area where it meets the flywheel? I'm running a 3 blade prop (size unknown) but it sure does bite great with very minimal cavitation,if any, could this be the prob?(too much bite)?? Vertical3-D watcha think......

I think the props to big and your roasting the clutch, cavitation is a problem and is better solved by trim tabs if you dont already have a set installed, if so you may just need to go easier on the throttle till on plane, then as long as you keep it on plane and let off in tighter turns it wont cavitate, it takes a little practice to turn fast laps with a nitrovee(i know we arnt racing, just didnt know what else to call it) so if you wanna try a different prop and see if it helps then Id suggest a 40mm CF prop from offshore, they are like 8 bucks and dont need sharpening or balancing, then when you find a good size get a metal one that size. and depending on how well the engine runs you may get away twisting a 42mm without to much trouble with the clutch...hope that helps

it just so happens i recieved an octura x637 in my mail today,I have no idea yet about what\where to start, whats the norm for this set-up,is this a good prop to start with?Resources are slim since I added 3 more boats to the "marina".How does this prop compare to the 40-42mm cf props?

4.8V Nicads work well. Next question,
I've stripped my boat down for painting.
Inside the hull is a thin clear plastic liner.
I need a new one, heat has curled the
edges and looks sorta funky. I can not
find a part number or anything about it.
I would like a nice new one, if I can't
find one does it matter much if I don't put the
old messed up back in?

the clear pieces are almost impossible to get if you nitro proof it then it would be fine, coat with nitro proof paint or epoxy or glass it, or d as i did and cut the curled edges off of it, then you still have the important part of it which is the bottom, especially under the engine between it and the tank...

As far as I know and read they only sell the liner brand new with the hull, I've seen them on Ebay rarely do they come up though. They sell nitro proof paint use that and put the old liner back in, somethings better than nothing. How did you wire up your nicad, did you have to use a different swtich that would reroute through the RTS? Thanks

Trimming the edges will work, didn't
think of that. For as wiring for nicads
was no problem. I used a different
on and off switch I got at Radio Shack.
Required some soldiering, I also
discarded the return to shore motor,
gears and switch. I've never had to
use the return to shore, I have a
whaler fishing boat and my kids
run the vees out in the middle of a
big lake and chase them with the
fishing boat. My boys don't like
to have to run around in circles
that like to race each other on
long straight aways. I'm not sure
how far they will run on a full tank
a fuel but at 30 something miles
per hour and 20 something mintues
run time we can go a loong way.

I would guess arond 15 minutes-ish, run 5 then check fuel level, that would give you an idea, then if it will run 15, run 10-12 and bring it in

RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
I've been using a x442 on my vee2.5. It's killer. Have not tried the x637 yet. The vee has had approx 20 great runs with the new clutch. It's back to boating and flying the super cub at the pond. As for my planes, I just finished building an Alfa Mig15 EDF. She will hit 85mph. Now I'm going to build a Stinger pylon racer. The performance setup I'm getting will do 110mph in a dive. That's sick speed when the plane is so small. Just imagine your vee doing 110mph.

Ive got a 637 on my vee with a trx2.5 in it. That prop runs circles around the x440 I had on there. Comes up on plane in a flash and acceleration is unbeliveable.

sometime after school I will be trying to get into turbine jets, then we are talking over 200mph in level flight...OH YEAH...lol, a vee at 110 I believe it would disintegrate at those speeds...anyone wanna attempt that one, itd have to be rocket propelled and wieghed down, I dont think itd even get to 80 though before disaster...oh well, fun though...

RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
I went to an RC jet rally in the spring, and there were about 40 turbine jets performing. They ranged from $2K to $18K. The BMV composite super bandits were doing knife edge passes at 180mph, 1ft above the ground. High speed dive passes were approx 225mph. A $17K super bandit crashed when the failsafe kicked in. It was shopvac time. I think the quest for speed has taken over. Maybe this will be me next boat? A carbon fiber sonic racing quad cat that does 90-100kph. Not in my budget. http://www.rcuniverse.com/mvp/videolink.cfm?postid=3037

RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
Hey guys great info on all the stuff to do to a nitro vee. I recently purchased porkchopp71's vee and are currently modding everything I read about in this forum. Any ideas on which fail-safe to use with the RTS?

use the duratrax micro failsafe, cheapest and works great, a failsafe and the RTS do not work together though, the RTS uses the throttle servo for activation when the boat is stalled, a failsafe cuts throttle if radio reception glitches for longer then a second or so and also if rx battery power gets to low, stopping the chance of a run away boat, if the failsafe kicks in there a good chance your going swimming or fishing to get it back. basicly just for emergencies whereas the RTS is a convinience thing.

RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
I need the rubber groment that fits
on the prop shaft part# 3540.
I found it in different part places
for $3.00 but with a $8.95 shipping
charge. I couldn't find it on Tower.
I'm not a cheapscate but $8.95
to ship a rubber part the size of
the tip of your little finger, give me
a break.

actually if you ship with UPS and they ship massive amounts of stuff, everything gets a box and even a little box costs about that much, cause they dunno if its going to be close by or across the country, not knocking you I understand how lame that is but kinda of a "what can you do" situation. if theyd take time to put it in an envelope then yeah it would be very cheap to ship, or just order two that way you have a spare and only one shipping cost...

RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
Ya, I bought 2 of the Duratrax micro fail-safe's already(one for my Nitro Stampede and the other for the Nitro Vee) but got to thinkin' after I learned how to program it and still don't think it'll work on the boat. If I set it to push the throttle closed that will activate the RTS and if interference is there, the steering probably wont work either so I couldn't get it coming back to me in that time. Ya know? I can run it inline with the steering servo and program it to go in circles but there's gotta be a better way? Any ideas or should I not even worry about a fail-safe? THANKS!!!!!

RE: The unofficial Home of all that is Nitro Vee...
Well the piece came in for my 2.5 vee friday got the old one out put the new one in and waited for saturday. Got out to the pond fired the boat up plopped it down it the water and took off. All was great for about the first tank of gas. Filled it back up and off I went again but this time I was hearing this noise like something was very bad out of line so I brought it in shut it down and pulled the cover off to have a look. Once again the seven dollar piece of plastic that mates the clutch to the prop drive shaft was melted where the prop shaft goes inside of it. Now im looking for a complete driveline make over im wanting to get the rossi speedmaster hardware like on off shore electrics. My question is what will I need besides the hardware kit and the coupler to mount the flex cable to the engine will I need to get it to work on a nitro vee. Im pretty set on getting that but im just not sure how to set it all up. [sm=confused.gif]

Ya, that upgraded power-plant will fry stock parts quick. I think that Speedmaster stuff may be too big for the V though. Isn't that hardware made for bigger hulls? I don't know. I'm currently reproducing my outdrive out of aluminum and the prop-shaft will be a brass tube with bearings. It will look just like the plastic one but a whole lot stronger and smoother. My driveshaft/stuffing box is set-up like this too with flanged bearings and it's like buttaa! Here's some current pix of the radio box I made.
