I been running an APC 16X8 on both of my DLE 20 sand have been very pleased. But I just assembled and started flying a Pulse 125. Not a lot of prop ground clearence. I switched to a 15X8 APC and am now turning 9300. Is that too much for my DLE 20s??. The manual/paper work does say 15X8 props but it also says 9000. Am I going to damge these little rascals? Thanks Brian Smith

Is the 16x8 too small for this engine? I figure if the 17x6 is ideal, the 16x8 should also be ok

I'm using a Truturn prop hub and as it turns at idle you can see it turning out of round. I thought it was my imagination at first but my friend noticed it too. When I put on just the hub and rotate it with just the hub you can feel the hub go up and then down. You can also see it in the prop rotation. Very strange indeed I admit. I'm perplexed. I may have to get a dial indicator to confirm it though.

I just checked it again with out the plug in and only the prop nuts and it is definitely bent[>:] I will order a new one today, and hopefully I won't have any more problems. What is the best way to pull off the hub? Thanks guys.

The hub is keyed on a straight shaft but you may need to nudge it with a puller?

Question 4 anyone. What is the minimum distance off (away from) the fire wall the carb can be without obstructing airflow into it?

If the carb is not more than 1/4" away from the firewall, I put a hole in the firewall.

I have a mid-range burble on my H9 Corsair. The low idle and high end are great but I see others have had this issue also and they say that I have to richen up the HS needle, is this the current conclusion from everyone that has had this?

Thanks,

Joe

IF the low end & high end and transition are all fine, nothing to worry about if you have a little mid range burbling.
No need to beat yourself up trying to get all such out, some is ok. Go fly & enjoy it!

O.K back again, I dumped the old gas out and mixed up a new batch with 4 oz's of oil this time for sure and now my baby is humming along sweet only now I've discovered that the crank on my Stearmans engine is bent ,...Any thought on a bent crank from starter use?

Not on gassers.
... its only common on easily flooded glow engines, especially those mounted inverted

If the firewall is fairly thick...you could just dish out about were the carb center (throat) is close. This give more strength and also if you can do it keep the behind the firewall more air tight. You may need to run a line to a dead air space from pump cover.

Is a 16x8 3 blade prop too much for this engine?

Wolflord:

I tested the master airscrew 3 blades and had the 14x7 and 15x7. They are both too small and have me over revving (10,500 and 9300 rpm). A couple pages back in the thread a master airscrew 16x8 had a static rpm of 8200, which in the air should unload to 8800-9000 which is about perfect. That is what I am going to use.

Here are some pics for Mr Wad. Let us know how it all turns out,Ive been thinking of redoing the other one I have also. Feel free to PM me if you need any more pics, this engine was made for this plane.
Great idea painting the needle screw heads. I am going to do this but in white. I have a hard time seeing mine inside the cowl. Way too dark. The white will reflect the light better.

Yes, I painted them over white also, after I took the picture I put the cowl on and realized it did not show up very well. I was thinking about glow in the dark paint also.

I have glow in the dark paint, used to paint my model rockets with it for those dusk launches. Made it easier to find the rocket in the dark.
Anyway the only problem is that you have to shine a light on the paint for a few minutes before it will "glow". Might be tough to do with the cowl on. I be interested if it works though.

Here a a few pics and results from tuned pipe testing with a new DLE 20. The header and pipe were originally used with an OS 120 AX. I had to make an adapter plate for the header to fit the DLE. The 120 AX has much wider bolt spacing. As a result the port matching is way off but seems to work fine. The props are more APC pattern type props as I don't have much selection of wood props. In addition to the ES 120AX pipe I also tried the ES 26G pipe which gives very similar result but I can't make the wrap around header short enough for this pipe on the smaller size props. A standard side exhaust header would work fine. The pipe was adjusted trombone style for each prop. I forgot to bring a tape measure so I can't give header lengths. Forgot the camera too so running pics are low res cell phone. I did not try the stock muffler.

I was very happy with the DLE. It's generally 300-500 behind the OS 120AX depending on how much nitro you give the OS. If the DLE were modified to run on glow I expect it would just as strong as the OS. I don't know how the two engines would compare on stock mufflers. A two stroke without a tuned exhaust is only half an engine. Of course running on gas has it's advantages and the DLE runs perfect.

I may put this in an older pattern plane, replacing an old YS. The APC 16x10 looks perfect for this at 8600.

All figures given are with a fully hot engine and the needle set to flying mixture, not squeezed for every last rpm. Hot restarts are one flip, no choke. I used a standard RCEXCL ignition not the stock one. Works great.

A gurgle is almost always slightly rich but if in the midrange only, not to worry, it is getting lubricated well.
