Default aeroace mods

This is a new thread dedicated to aa mods. This thread is intended for mods only. For general questions and information please visit the air hogs aero ace thread. We will welcome you into the fold.

I am going to open with my most recent mods. But in the future I will endeavor to bring old, to me, mods to the fore front. The most basic mod is to remove the spars, or supports, between the wings. If you did that after your 5th flight, or earlier, you want to read this thread. I hope my friends will help populate this forum with mods. I do have one request from you, let us know if you're using the mod. We don't have to tell you anything, saying thank you costs you nothing. Tim

Default RE: aeroace mods

Here are pics of my latest aero mods. These are based on the mono mod. To remove the lower wings start at either the front or back and slowly peel the wing off. It is held in place by soft glue. With the lower wing removed you'll find that the plane is faster, but less responsive. It will float it flight. In these pics I have taken plastic stir straws and anchored the wing to the body more securely. This is a somewhat harder plane to fly. For the mod with only 2 stir sticks the length of the stir stick is 3.25". For the double stir stick the lengths are 3 3/8 and 3 7/16 approx. The goal is to maintain the original wing angle. These planes are far more responsive than the bipe or the plain mono mod.

lol, i think this is a long over-due thread.

Just the two of you have been more helpful than i can express. Micro, thanks for the links and the wiki. Fern, thanks for the suggestions. Hope the whole AHAA community is just as great. Your work and input is MUCH appreciated. If you need any help, just let me know.

This is GREAT.

Hi all, Micro builder has done an amazing job in one night. I assumed a longer time frame, because I would be doing the work and don't really know how to do it.

here is an update to an earlier mod that I posted. It is the half lower wing mod, post 1828. I refined that lower wing down to 1.25" from the fuse or body. Overall the wing will be in the 1 3/8 range. It should terminate halfway under the motor.

My goal was to build a plane that would fly at walking speed. To accomplish, I built a 4" by 34" balsa and tissue wing and stabilizer. I don't have an accurate scale, but I estimate AUW to be 23 grams. The estimator says 4.6 MPH speed for stable flight.

The reality is that this thing needs a dead calm day in an open field to test. Fotunately, here in N. Calif we have spectactular weather this time of year; warm, clear and calm; sometimes all day long but definately at sunrise/sunset. As you may suspect, turning is an issue. The thrust differential is not enough to turn in much less than a 50 foot radius. I have not, but will do the transmitter diode mod, since I have plenty of transmitters.

I attemped something similar with heavier Bass wood frame (I didn't know the difference) and components removed from older AAs. I fried three RX's before settling on this approach.

Micro builder,

We are truly indebted to you for all that work. Just what I was looking for. Sure beats wading through so much information. I 've just sucked in my brother-in-law into the AA world and hopefully onto more RC flying.

clovus

p.s My toon racer is still going strong. Thanks for the plans.

OK, I glued the canards in the straight with the fuse position. I also changed the channel from a to c. This plane has the same rx as the bipe. I'll know more about flight tomorrow. Tim

I forgot the pics. I think the change in the canard angle, combined with the down stab solve the wasout problem. Any way here are the pics. Tim

I increased the range by peeling the body apart an pulling about 1/2 inch of antenna out. I then used a bit of scotch gift tape to re-seal the fuse and cover the antenna wire. That increased my range to the same range as my aces, generally 300' up and 200' out.

I tried this mod, it fell out of the sky

I could not get 5 feet off the ground...

Thanks for this great thread, everyone. It's just terrific to find all the mods in one place.

Here's my question. I have two AA bipes, both with a channel B Rx. I have three Tx's: two factory set to B and one to C. I'd like to be able to fly both AAs at the same time with my kids. The obvious solution is to switch one of the Rx's to channel C. But for the life of me I can't find instructions on how to change the Rx channel. I'm pretty clueless electronically, so maybe I'm just missing it. I see the instructions on how to change the Tx so that it can switch channels, but given my situation that's not going to help. I've looked at the pictures at http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_33...18/key_/tm.htm, but, again, they seem to be all Tx pictures. I need to switch one Rx to channel C, not change the Tx to work on any channel.

I'm looking forward to firing up a soldering iron (mostly so my kids will laugh at how inept I am with it), but not sure where to start. Any advice -- or links to instructions that are probably out there but I'm just not seeing -- from this group would be much appreciated.

you're right, no links for the RX channel changing mod. odd, i wonder if i missed it...

well, anyway, this might help. i took a picture of the AAs RX, the red box is surrounding the 3 solder pads that you would use to change the channel. in the picture, you can see the three pads labeled C S2 B, and S2 and B are soldered together, and this makes it a B channel. if you want to change it to C channel, you just need to unsolder the bridge between S2 and B, then solder S2 and C together. if you want it an A channel, you can just leave all three pads unsoldered. its not too bad, since the pads are right on the edge of the RX. i also added an mspaint drawing to show how the pads would look for each channel, just to make sure things are clear

Thanks so much, MicroBuilder. This is great -- now I get it, and now I see it (and I actually do think I saw this elsewhere, now that I'm looking at the pic you posted). But of course, one question always leads to another. In the course of disassembling my AA to get at the Rx, I broke off the very thin antenna wire from where I assume it connects to the Rx. Now there's a 1/4 inch piece of antenna wire sticking out from the open end of the boom. Do you know where I should connect this wire to the Rx? I couldn't find an answer to this in any quick searches of the forums.

Thanks, once again.

looks like adding some of these diagrams would've been helpfull to start off with. next time i update the page-o-links, i'll add them.

for now though, here's a pic showing where the antenna is soldered to. this usually requires removing the RX from the grey plastic base, there's two little screws holding the RX to the plastic. if you've got a fine tip on your soldering iron, you might be able to solder the wire back on without having to remove the RX from the plastic.

if the antenna wire broke in half in the tail boom, you'll want to make sure you either solder the antenna back together, or put a new one on. otherwise the range will be decreased.

i did that exact operation without removeing the RX from the plastic all you have to do is put the soldering on the antenna and push it against the spot before it cools it avoids short circuiting the board.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Actually, it was in the course of removing the board from the grey housing that the antenna came loose. I had thought it would be easier to do the channel switch mod with the Rx removed from the housing. Live and learn.

I hope I won't get flamed for asking this in this forum, but is that the back of an Ovation on the far right of your picture, MicroBuilder? Toys, toys, toys . . . .

Thanks again.

oh no, no Ovations here! from left to right, Bourgeois Slope-D with custom 12 fret neck and slotted headstock, Everette all mohagony body triple 0, and a Bourgeois Slope-D with special ordered exotic woods. the first is my dads, second is my step moms, last one is mine - they're not cheap, but they sound better than any other acoustics i've heard or played (except maybe the old Martins). playing guitar is what calms my nerves after a frustrating RC plane build do you play?

thanks for the links. i probably wont be updating the list anytime soon, for some reason RCU has it so if a post is a few months old, you cant edit it. why this is, i dont know, but its a pain in the butt when it comes to things like this, as now i have to get ahold of one of the moderators to update the list for me. they should really change that.

i do have some AA Jet mod links saved on my computer, as i was going to start an AA Jet mod thread like this one, but i havent had time to work on it. but, when i do update the list next time, i'll add your links if i havent started the Jet mod thread at that time.

thanks again,
nick

FAF, link doesn't work?

i know i haven't posted my pics of the new tx mods yet. can't think of a better time than now. i still need to include the switchable +500 to be complete (i mistakenly typed "+500" in the pic where it should say "slow turn"). when that's done i'll work on a new tx guide and post it to aatoolbox unless someone else gets to it first.

Truglodyte, that is the page for the acro-jet and probably the sport flier tx. I'll check out your tx mod soon, but I just looked at the clock, and pumpkinhood is approaching. My latest retro mod is on the aa thread. Tim
